A state will have jurisdiction over custody matters if the minor child has lived with a parent or a person acting as a parent in that state for six consecutive months prior to the initiation of a custody action. If the minor child is less than six months old, the home state will be the state where the minor child has lived since birth. In the exceptional case where the child is over the age of six months and has not lived in one state for six consecutive months, jurisdiction will be determined on a case by case basis with an emphasis on which state has the most significant connections with the minor child.
